The Boat School-Husson To Hold Boat School Discovery Day On October Second For Prospective Students From Maine & New Brunswick

The Boat School-Husson, America's oldest boat building school, will hold an open house at their Eastport, Maine campus on October 2 for prospective students from Maine and New Brunswick.

The all-day event will provide prospective students from high schools in Maine and New Brunswick with the opportunity to learn first hand what the school offers in their one and two-year programs. The Boat School - Husson offers one and two year certificate and diploma programs in Wood Construction, Marine Systems, Composite & Fiberglass Construction, Marine Painting and Marine Mechanical Systems. The Discovery Day program begins at 10:00AM and runs until 2:00PM.

"The day is designed for 11th and 12th graders," says Boat School administrator John Miller. "At our Boat School Discovery Day students will get a chance to tour our waterfront campus, explore our Boat Shop and training facilities, talk with instructors and students, participate in hands-on demonstrations, meet with the associate dean regarding admissions and financial aid, hear about Maine’s North Star Alliance, and participate in a conversation with leaders of the marine trades industry about the great careers they offer – all in a casual and relaxed atmosphere. We will even treat everyone to lunch."

The Boat School Discovery Day is also open to parents and anyone that is interested in attending The Boat School and pursuing a career in the marine trades. Anyone that would like to attend needs to register before September 30th by calling 207-853-2518.

Husson College is the largest private educator of Maine students and offers certificates, associates, bachelors, masters and doctoral programs at various locations across the state.

Boat building classes are conducted in a well-equipped waterfront campus at Deep Cove, in Eastport, Maine. Through a combination of technical instruction and practical hands-on boat building experience, students acquire an understanding of the principles of boat design, drafting, marine systems, marine painting, mechanical systems, and composites. They also develop the skills for lofting, building wood and fiberglass boats, as well as maintaining and restoration of boats. With tuition at only $8000.00 a year for both Maine and New Brunswick students, The Boat School in Eastport is the regions most comprehensive and affordable boatbuilding program on both sides of the border. The tuition includes a thousand dollars worth of tools that are the students to keep after completion of their program.

"This is a hands-on school for professional boatbuilders and mechanics. Graduates have gained a national reputation for excellence," says David G. Brown, author of Boatbuilding with Baltek Durakore.

Upon completion of the boat building program, graduates will be qualified for the following positions: Boatbuilding (wood & composite), Marine joiner, Mold Maker, Lofting technician, Marina Technician, Composite Technician, Hull Surveyor Assistant, Systems Installer, Job Estimator, Boat Repairer, Shipwright, Service manager, Yard manager, Travel lift Operator, Cabinetry Technician, Fiberglass Boat Repairer, Marine Painter and Marine Mechanical Systems Technician.

The Boat Building Industry in Maine and New Brunswick is vibrant and growing. The first ship in America was built in Maine over 400 years ago. Four centuries later, the industry offers more quality jobs then there are people to fill them. These are careers with benefits and long term stability.  Today there is a shortage of qualified applicants for jobs in boat repair and construction facilities the full length of the Maine Coast.  In addition Maine trained boat builders are highly sought after by boat building operations on the entire East Coast of the United States.  Maine's boat building industry is robust as the State's third largest industry, employing over 2,500 workers with annual sales over $355 million and a payroll of $95 million.
